The Trust was originally formed in 1995 to help fund the Argyle Youth scheme and helped to ensure that there was a steady supply of young players for the club for over a decade. The Argyle youth scheme has produced some great players - Martin Hodge, Gary Megson, Mike Trebilcock, Dave Phillips, Colin Sullivan, Norman Piper, Nicky Jennings, Martin Barlow, Kevin Hodges and, in more recent years, Paul Wotton, Mickey Evans, Luke McCormick, Paul Connolly and Gary Sawyer have all come through it's ranks. The club would certainly be poorer without its flow of young players. In the summer of 2007, Plymouth Argyle made the decision to rehouse the Youth players who needed local accommodation. Consequently, there was no longer a need for the Trust to continue to run the Argyle Hostel, the premises in Sutherland Road that had been their home for several years. As a result, the Trust has now sold the Argyle Hostel and is now in a position to grant funds to organisations with aims that are in line with the Trust's Constitution, which is simply defined as "to provide and assist in the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupation for the benefit of young persons under 18 and resident in the counties of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset and in particular, to provide education and training in the skills and techniques in football, so that due attention is given to the education and development of such persons". Clearly, the main purpose of the Trust was to help Plymouth Argyle develop its youth players, but that direct relationship has ended, for the time being at least. So, the Trust would now like to turn its attention to supporting local projects and organisations that share the general aim of developing football players in the region. It would be our preference to assist groups that have some connection to Plymouth Argyle in particular, but this will not be a pre-requisite before funding is considered. Match funding would be expected, but again, this is not necessarily a barrier to grants being made. The grant process will begin by downloading an application form from this address - www.argyletrust.org.uk/appform.pdf Applications can only be made in writing via this route and no other communications will be considered. Grant applications will be assessed and awarded on a yearly basis. We look forward to hearing from you - and perhaps to work with you and your organisation to continue the good work of the Plymouth Argyle Supporters Training and Development Trust, for the betterment of the youth of the region. If you have been making a regular donation to support the Trust, then you may wish to reconsider this. The Trust is well-funded at present, so you may feel it would be beneficial to suspend any further donations for the time being. We may need to ask for contributions again in the future, if new opportunities to support the club's youth and training facilities arise, so it may be sensible to defer any new charitable donations until that time. |
